Wx overview

Wx, the venerable weather app, has been reinvented! Wx displays current conditions, forecasts, warnings, and radar for U.S. locations using high fidelity XML data from the U.S. National Weather Service. The app is designed for two specific types of customers: serious weather watchers who want detailed information and facts with no fuss, and casual users who want a fast, clean, and functional weather app. Under the hood, Wx has all new download and processing engines, and is faster than ever. It's more reliable than ever too, offering multiple levels of redundancy to handle severe weather events that can strain NWS servers.

Wx lets you set up locations on an embedded map, guiding you to choose nearby NWS observation sites (over 1700 available in the U.S. and its territories), nearby NEXRAD radar sites, and nearby city- and county-based alert zones. The app sets up a 7-day summary "point" forecast customized for the specific latitude and longitude of the location, and a 7-day "pro" forecast that graphs temperature (actual and apparent), dew point, relative humidity, cloud cover, wind speed, wind direction, gust speed, 12-hour probability of precipitation, 6-hour liquid precipitation amount, and 6-hour snow amount. Wx’s pro forecast is also latitude/longitude based, and is about as good as it gets if you need to plan work, sports, and outdoor activities based on upcoming weather. With their high spatial resolution, the point and pro forecasts are especially useful in coastal and mountainous regions where typical zone forecasts can be inaccurate. These forecasts are backed up by a regional text forecast bulletin for additional information.

Wx also lets you bookmark and setup weather maps for quick reference. Choose from over 40 default NWS maps and images, or provide the URL for any map of your choice and load it right in the app! If you have preferred weather providers or use a private weather service, you can load your favorite maps and images right in Wx and keep them handy. Other features of Wx include a display of weather conditions in the dock icon, seven day sun and moon phase information, and a high performance radar display with seven types of radar on a zoomable live map.

Wx 6.1 is an evolutionary release. The 5.x series was great, but it's interface didn't leave anymore room to grow. 6.x is going to surpass the 5.x series. The developer is VERY responsive to feature and bug updates. He is careful to release only fully tested products - or so it seems. No, I'm no relation or compensated reviewer..

I never explored Wx prior to version 6, so this is a review based on its existing feature set, not how it compares to previous versions. At $9.99, Wx is the best weather app I've encountered for the Mac. The interface is clean and easy to use and the features are deeper than any other weather app for the Mac. It's responsive and comprehensive; the only real shortcoming being that it's limited the USA only. I'd love to see a menu bar item (similar to the excellent & free WeatherDock) for when I just want a quick glance at conditions, but as long as WeatherDock keeps working its omission isn't a big loss.

In my honest opinion Wx 6 is a version 1 app. Compared to it's predecessor Wx 5.4.x, it's RADAR system is crippled. The old Wx 5.4.x RADAR window allowed users to turn off the RIDGE view... which displays the land's topographic features. This view may be distracting to some. I prefer to look at the radar without the RIDGE view - since it makes seeing the county lines and cities easier during heavy radar events. Wx 6.x doesn't offer this. Wx 5.4.x's RADAR window also *had* features such as the "9-Square box" which allowed users to quickly "jump" to neighboring RADAR zones. I used this 9-Square box frequently to keep track of approaching storms, as well as to continue monitoring the storm as it progressed past my default home RADAR zone. Wx 6.x doesn't offer this either. The RADAR implication in Wx 6.x is garbage... it's a *MAJOR* down-grade from it's predecessor Wx 5.4.x. Wx 5.4.x users who are accustomed to the EPIC RADAR window will now be extremely disappointed with Wx 6.x's RADAR offering. Wx 6.x may be a "reinvented" (developer's word) version of Wx, but it's "reinvented" features are not what Wx 5.4.x users are accustomed to. - A long time Wx user.

Very disappointed. When I saw this for 10 bucks through the app store, I bought immediately. It works, albeit slowly. When I update manually the info stays the same. And the new GUI is horrible. Ugly. The versions that were available before this were very pleasing to the eye, whereas this would make a Windows user proud. To the developers, go back to the old ways. Fix the update issue, and go back to the Mac style GUI.

I really like what I see in this app, but it's too expensive for me. If it was included in a bundle or put as a daily discount, I'd buy in a minute.
