Wiki Offline overview

Wiki Offline delivers the premium reading experience for the entire corpus of human knowledge. This premiere service is the result of collaboration with over 1000 users just like you. Join the myriad of scientists, teachers, frequent flyers, vacationers, parents, and knowledge lovers whose lives have been improved by Wiki Offline.

Upon launching the app, you will be prompted to download Wikipedia onto your device. Every article will be available for you with no Internet connection required. It has been meticulously compressed (English is under 3GB) while maintaining all of the data in every single article. (Note that pictures and tables are not included, but can be downloaded from within the app). This download is fully resumable and hosted on high speed servers located around the world.

After that, you can download the latest version of the database in the app, or you can download additional languages. Please note that there is a nominal $0.99 fee to partially offset our costs to deliver such large files (we usually lose money on this).

From the site, it looks like a tablet, or even worse, a phone app. Wo will compare it to Kiwix (that is free, actually desktop-oriented, and offline with pictures too?)

I am just not that curious for me to want the entire collective knowledge of humanity on my computer but it is a astonishing concept. The future has arrived. This would have seemed impossible once. BUT... I shall keep on using the online database. 3 gigabytes is a lot of disk space after all.

I'm trying to get Wikipedia onto a PowerPC Mac running 10.5.8. for somebody without web access. It's a shame that this program doesn't support PPC because there is a definite correlation between people with older computers and lack of internet access. I can get it on my intel mac and ipad, but not PPC? I've bit torrenting the Wikimedia XML package, scraping the site , but still no luck. It is a shame that poorer people get left out of the picture again and disappointing that wikipedia hasn't made more efforts to cater for people withoiut internet.

Well I love the idea, I do not have the internet at home as of yet, just moved to the UAE and use a Net Cafe, and I love the fact that I have Wiki at home now, just took me about 3 days to completely d/l the database, but I too would like to be able to make updates say maybe once a month but as for now this is fine. Thanks for the good work.
