Synthesia overview

Synthesia is a free game that teaches you to play the piano using falling notes.

With it, you can:
  • Learn to play songs using a musical keyboard connected to your computer.
  • Keep track of your progress in every song with per-song scoreboards.
  • Slow, fast-forward, and rewind songs while learning new parts.
  • Practice left and right hand parts together or separately.
  • Try out any MIDI file you can find on the Internet.

With the new (completely optional) for-pay "Learning Pack" component there are a couple more features you can unlock. Have an easier time learning the notes in a song with the new practice mode. And, view songs as sheet music in addition to the falling note display.

What’s new in version 10.6.5425

As usual, MacUpdate search engines faileed to find the most current update which is version 10.xx that came out in January 2015. There was some very much needed gui updating but the programme itself is still weird and defies logic. For example, there is not much to go by to using the app from the Apple menu bar. There is just the name of the programme with a drop down menu of About and Quit and the second item in the Apple menu bar is Window. For now i am joining the community boards to ask for help . Regret that i have to give such a low score to this app however with perhaps another hundred hours trying to learn the programme since i already know how toplay a keybaord i may change my mind.

In this latest update, there is some weirdness in that the main application is still a universal Intel/PPC binary, but the configuration utility is Intel-only.

No doubt fingering techniques are most important so your digits don't trip over themselves. After a quick glance at this update, would be useful to see the "finger number" on the keyboard as well as the piano roll. Better yet would be a hand showing cross-over techniques, but that sounds like a fair amount of work for the programer and there's more than one way to execute a music passage. Haven't looked through docs, but I guess there must be a way to add fingering notation to your own MIDI files since the programer's done it with his/hers.
