Imposition Wizard overview

Imposition Wizard is imposition software for Mac OS X. It reads PDF files, applies transformations to pages and saves the results to another PDF file. You can create booklets and books, prepare business cards for print and much, much more. All the power is packed into a simple user interface that allows you to see your changes in real-time. Imposition Wizard doesn't require the third party applications like Acrobat or InDesign.

Imposition Wizard supports all the main imposition schemes: Booklet, N-Up, Step and Repeat and Cut Stack. It allows you to shuffle pages of the source document and reorder sheets of the destination document. You can add custom backgrounds from another file and flip it from page to page. You may shift page content for booklets (creep), add bleeds and crop marks. Imposition Wizard has many other features that will make your job done faster and better as well. You may crop the source document before imposing, add bleeds and paddings, reorder and rotate source pages and much more. Imposition Wizard applies every one of your actions in real-time and you always see the final document immediately with no multi-step wizards that only show your results at the end!

Why Imposition Wizard?
  • It is a standalone application and doesn't require any third party software to do the job.
  • It applies all your changes in realtime. You see the results immediately at each step of the imposition.
  • It can be controlled using AppleScript, and is compatible with any workflow.
  • It has a clean and easy user interface, and is built natively for Mac OS X.
  • It is created with usability in mind and we always listen to our users and implement the features they want.

I don't understand why this is shown as $15. Their website says you can A) pay a one-time fee of $599 or B) pay $1 per user per day with one year paid up front. This app runs as a demo which watermarks every page printed out.

I bought this fabulous application a few months ago. I had the necessity to print a booklet with a right-to-left script that unfortunately Imposition Wizard could not handle then. I contacted the developer and in a short time a new version (1.8.2) was released that handled right-to-left texts and booklets properly. I always received quick response to all my demands and the developer gave me with the best customer support in the industry. Thank you for being so wonderful. Fariborz AMIRSHAHI - Verona (Italy)

Excellent application. Very responsive company. I sent in my requests and they followed through except for one. Here are the ones I requested... 1. Percentage size that sticks. Every time you opened a PDF, it would go to 40% and now it always starts at 100%. 2. Imposition always started with a weird sheet size. I've asked them if they could give us a default option and they implemented it. Now it imposes automatically at 12 x 18 inches (which is what I set it at). Hooray! 3. Updates, before you had to go to the website to see if there are any updates to the app. They've implemented the update mechanism within the app. I requested that they make it so that when you drop a PDF onto the icon, it would automatically open up the IW and impose. I don't know if it's too difficult but dang that would be a great little productivity booster.

OK folks, I humbly stand corrected on this one. As one commenter put it, I should have researched more and mouthed off less. My own use of something like this is limited to creating booklet-sized brochures, nothing more. It's obvious that IW does so much more and then some at a decent price. However, if you're looking for something to help with booklets, try BookLightning or FitPlot Booklet maker. My apologies to all for my earlier comment.

This is a really wonderful, powerful piece of software, at a mere fraction of the cost of similar applications. Within minutes of using the demo (fully functional with a watermark), I had created a press-ready 16-page imposed signature. I cannot say the same for my experience with Preps, for example. To be fair, I have experience with the process of imposing files, so I found IW very easy to use. If you are new to imposition, you will want to read up on it first. There are some pointers to information at http://desktoppub.about.com/od/imposition/Imposition.htm. The article in Wikipedia on "imposition" is rudimentary and cites no sources, alas. A further plus is that it read and writes PDFs. So far, I have not found PDFs that are a problem for the program. Another plus is that IW writes its own files -- XML files -- that contain all the information about a given imposition. Using the power of "Save" and "Save As..." it it possible to recycle the application files for new imposition projects. The program can also be controlled with AppleScript! There is room for improvement, but IW is currently only at version 1.2 (June 18, 2009) and will certainly become even more formidable in the future. It is very easy to use, not least because you see instantaneously a preview of the entire imposition. Every change you make in the imposition is shown instantly in the preview. The developer seems genuinely interested in getting feedback from users. First rate, and highly recommended. Money very well spent.
