Iconographer overview

Iconographer is our own icon-creation tool, and we've decided to share it with you, because designing application icons or customizing icons can be a tedious and time-consuming task--especially application icons, as you need to also create the related "Document" icons, "Disk Image" icon, and possibly even a folder icon--not forgetting that different operating systems have different guidelines for how app icons should look. We've included templates and styles to simply the process of creating icons for OS X/macOS, Windows, and Web icons (such as favicons and Apple Touch icons).

Iconographer supports you through every step of the icon-creation process:

  • Previewer
    • The macOS Dock (it actually replaces the Iconographer icon)
    • The macOS About Box
    • A Mac App Store sample
    • QuickLook Preview
    • iPhone 6 home screen and App Store
    • iPad 2 home screen
    • Contact sheet showing the icon at various sizes
  • Editor
    • Layers, with blending modes, opacity and clipping
    • Layer dimensions are actually displayed in the layer while you're moving it around (awesome)
    • Platform specific shapes, such as the macOS circle, rounded rect, Windows tile and iOS rounded square
    • Multiple 1-Click Styles, for not only each icon, but also each platform
    • A choice of 5 different backgrounds
    • Shared graphic layers, set the image once and it's used across all the icons
    • Shared colors and gradients; helping to keep your icon's identity across platforms
    • Shared labels; perfect for any text you need on the icon
    • Increase readability; keeps legibility of text at smaller sizes
    • Snapping guidelines, help to keep the elements in line
    • Overview; provides a small preview helping to simulate what the icon will look like at smaller sizes
  • Generator
    • Formats include; ICNS, Iconset, Windows ICO, TIFF, and PNG
    • Highly compressed icons; up-to 75% smaller than competing applications
    • Choice over which sizes are included in the exported icons
    • ICNS files can support Mac OS X 10.0 through to macOS 10.12 Sierra
    • Windows ICO files can support Windows 95 up to Windows 10
    • Export all platforms in one click by selecting "Build all selected icons"
    • Bitmap image export; control over file format, image size, and resolution

Iconographer is a good icon creation tool, which I already registered. It even accepts Adobe Illustrator vector files. However, I can't find a way to add separate images (i.e. png) for each icon size i.e. 32x32, 16x16 as I can do in Xcode. I can only change editor size from 128 to 1024 px, which is not related to icon size.

Iconographer is a great time saver for creating Icons. I have been using it for the past 2 days for Web graphics and iOS icons. It's fast and easy to use. It does the job well for what it is built for. I can definitely recommend it!

A great App. Ohanaware produces several pieces of software, most of which I own. They are all good; but I think this is not only the best, but the most fun. I have absolutely no professional need to design icons. I just find them a really convenient way to locate and identify often accessed folders and files. I had the limited ability to do this with previously prepared icons or those already included with the operating system. Here's where the fun part comes in: I can now easily design my personal and customized icons for use. My desktop is now not only more attractive, but works much more like MY desktop. Sam Rowlands writes the code and works very hard to regularly improve it and to correct any glitches. He is responsive to reported issues; and just flat out one of the good guys. Support him, buy the software and make your life easier and more enjoyable.

I love this. It's not just an image resizer and packer like all the others. Iconographer you can actually design your icon right in the app. It makes Mac App Store style icons super easy. When I'm creating a quick app I don't really want to hire an icon designer, so in a few clicks Iconographer makes a great standardized icon. Additionally it makes document icons. It really saves me the trouble of digging around through the system to gather resources, and spending time in Pixelmator making things look right. Iconographer saves me money and stress, and makes my small time apps look a little more complete. Now if only I could get some of those developers with ugly icons to buy and use Iconographer
