GEDitCOM II overview

GEDitCOM II is a new genealogy application for OS X that sets the standard for Mac ease-of-use editing of genealogy files, for customization of the user experience, and for power features allowing the greatest access to your genealogical data. GEDitCOM II is a complete rewrite of the former GEDitCOM application.

GEDitCOM II is a rewritten version of GEDitCOM using Apple's Cocoa environment. It will greatly exceed user-interface features of GEDitCOM. It will retain the philosophy of GEDitCOM to be a customizable genealogy application for editing and viewing GEDCOM genealogy files. Users of GEDitCOM, should find GEDitCOM II easy to use. The installation will replace any prior installed beta versions of GEDitCOM II (if you have it in your main "Applications" folder); it will not affect the original GEDitCOM application (if you have that on your computer).

GEDitCOM II, as a new application, will not be a free update of GEDitCOM. It will be significantly discounted for current GEDitCOM users (with a few free copies for those who have been providing input during development).

What’s new in version 2.4

Version 2.4:

Note: Now requires OS X 10.10 or later

  • This update fixes issues found in High Sierra included updating code to eliminate all "deprecated" methods (which was challenging process due to rather sparse state of current Apple developer documentation).
  • High Sierra broke web views used to display maps. They have been rewritten and are now working again. In addition, you now have a choice of displaying maps using Google Maps or OpenLayers (a public domain mapping service).
    • Extensions that create maps will create them using the selected mapping service.
    • A scripting property lets an extension determine which mapping method the user has selected.
    • Icons for points of interest on maps are now stored on geditcom.com, becuase High Sierra refuses to load locally stored icons in Google maps. The POIs now work (but are no longer customizable by users).
  • If GEDitCOM II fails to read a GEDCOM file claimed to have UTF8 encoding (because it has an encoding error), it now tries alternate reading methods and displays message that extra methods were tried. Before it would just give up.
  • High Sierra has some bugs in split pane windows (such as some window with notes in one pane and rest of the record in another pane). A work around was found that now appears to get around that bug.
  • MacOS has revised the way applications should implement drag and drop features. All GEDitCOM II drag and drop features were updated to current methods (which may have fixed drag and drop issues seen in some recent MacOS versions).
  • Various minor improvements, including improvements in provided browser styles and extensions.

The best by a long way. When I started working on our family tree I tried most of the genealogy programs available for the Mac but it didn’t take a lot of thought to settle on GEDitCOM. I checked back on the others from time to time and never saw anything to make me change. When GEDitCOM II came out my comment on another review site was “the best just got a whole lot better”. Since then each revision has added a further swathe of improvements. You can use it “out of the box” and it will do pretty much anything you want; you can tweak it a little using the inbuilt customization options or by fairly simple editing of the formats to suit your particular needs or your preferences about how it looks; or if you’re more adventurous you can make major changes. But underneath it all is a rock-solid base built on the Gedcom standard. Other programs use Gedcom but often adapt it in ways that hinder the transfer of information to other users: GEDitCOM even provides ways to correct these idiosyncracies. The developer, John Nairn, is very responsive to requests for help or to suggestions for future changes. (Contrast the adverse comments about the developers of one of the other major programs who, according to one reviewer, had “even gone to the length of contacting me regarding negative feedback on third party sites and telling me that the program simply MUST work. It has to be me that is causing the problems.”)
