ASCII Art overview

ASCII Art is a powerful generator that converts digital pictures into amazing looking text art. Output art to both black/white text and full color, with the ability to export plain text, HTML, TIFF, and RTF files. A user editable character set adjusts the available characters to be used, while the maximum character width option controls the finished product size. Real time previews make for easy source image tweaking, allowing for the best possible results to be obtained.

Compatible source images include JPEG, PNG, GIF, BMP, PSD, TIF, TGA, JPG, TIFF, and more. Output quality greatly depends on the input file. Often images such as clip art work better than sources such as digital pictures. High image contrast and a clean white background always helps. Your milage may very, experiment!

What's the max width (in characters) for the Mac version? The screenshots on the developer's website show the iPad version as being limited to 200 characters width. Customizable character sets is an attractive feature...

$20??? O.o When options like this (http://picascii.com/) exist? I could see there being a convenience / Mac app coolness price < $5'ish, but 4 times that level is really making my head spin. Obviously I'm not rating this as I don't want to skew your score without evaluating it first for real, but could you please advise as to how this is worth the investment? Otherwise I have no reason to even explore this app.

Major problems. Crashes when I use the preview button. It doesn't matter if Iuse the symbols button or when I manually add them to the text box. Nice idea and a good looking UI though. iMac using 10.6.5
